SIZE ANSWER

Size 5 is the full adult match standard; youth sizes vary by competition, so league rules should beat any universal age chart

For size 5, the official standard is clear: IFAB Law 2 specifies 68–70 cm circumference and 410–450 g at the start of the match. Youth soccer is less universal. Size 3 and size 4 are common developmental sizes, but age cutoffs differ among leagues and governing bodies. Use your competition's rule first and treat age charts as shopping guidance only.

WHY SIZE CHANGES DEVELOPMENT

A smaller ball changes the task, not just the measurement

Foot-to-ball scale

For a smaller player, an appropriately sized ball can make dribbling, striking and receiving more manageable.

Weight and force

Youth-appropriate sizes reduce the mismatch between player strength and full-size ball mass.

Technique repetitions

A player who can manipulate the ball confidently gets more meaningful repetitions than one fighting oversized equipment.

LEAGUE-RULE OVERRIDE

Why we do not print a fake universal U8/U10/U12 law

Youth organizations do not all use identical cutoffs. A local league can move to size 4 or size 5 at a different age than another association. If your registration packet, league handbook or coach specifies a size, use that. A commercial article should not overwrite the competition rule with a generic age table.

FUTSAL EXCEPTION

Nominal size does not tell the whole story

FIFA describes futsal as using an optimized ball with reduced bounce. That means a standard outdoor youth size 4 should not be treated as equivalent just because the diameter is similar.

Use a purpose-built low-bounce ball.

PRESSURE MATTERS TOO

Correct size at the wrong pressure still changes the experience

IFAB Law 2 sets full-size match-ball pressure at 0.6–1.1 atmosphere at sea level. Product markings may specify a narrower recommended range. Use the manufacturer's printed range for everyday setup while respecting competition rules.

A pump plus gauge is more useful than guessing by thumb pressure.

FAMILY BUYING SCENARIOS

Three common cases

One child, one league

Buy the league-required size and prioritize durable training construction.

Siblings in different age groups

Label sizes clearly; a multi-size model family such as Nike Academy can simplify consistency.

Coach across age groups

Keep separate bags by size so warmups and drills do not mix equipment accidentally.

Use league rules first. Use size 5 as the full adult standard. Treat size 3/4 age ranges as guidance, not law.

And never confuse outdoor size 4 with a futsal ball just because the dimensions look similar.

Research: IFAB Law 2 sets size-5 match specifications at 68–70 cm, 410–450 g and 0.6–1.1 atmosphere. SELECT's current published chart lists common size-3 and size-4 circumference ranges; FIFA describes futsal balls as reduced-bounce equipment.
